Parent Resource: 50+ After-School Conversation Starters
(Beyond “How Was Your Day?”)
Asking kids about school can sometimes feel like pulling teeth, especially if you stick to the old “How was your day?” Instead, use these fun, thoughtful, and creative prompts to start conversations. Pick a few each week, mix them up, and watch your child open up in new ways. Don’t forget to join the conversation and answer the questions. This helps your child understand that you have a life outside of their own.

💡 Parent Tip
Kids often open up when they’re not put on the spot. Try asking one or two of these questions while sharing a snack, during a car ride, or at bedtime. Keep it light, follow their lead, and let them know you’re interested in their world.
Don’t expect long answers every time. The key is to ask with genuine interest, listen without judgment, and let your child lead the conversation. Over time, these questions build trust and give you a deeper window into their school life.
